If you think design and styling don’t go hand in hand, meet fashion star Cher Coulter. This Central Saint Martin’s grad launched her own line in 1996 and five years later found herself in Hollywood catering to the likes of Nicole Richie, Kirsten Dunst and Emily Mortimer. The stylist reveals her must-haves for fall and more!
Longtime friend and client Kate Bosworth dons a look styled by Cher.
On going from designer to stylist: “When I moved to L.A. about 11 years ago, I immediately began visiting all the top local magazines, one of them being Flaunt, to present my clothes to the editors. Then randomly I bumped into Orlando Bloom at a concert, who happens to be an old friend, and Flaunt was planning to shoot him for the cover. I let them know that I was a friend and they asked me to style the shoot. From then on, I became heavily involved with styling rather than designing.”
When Elizabeth Olsen needs to look red carpet ready Cher is her go-to girl.
On her rules for dressing: “Individuality is something I think is lost. We have so many reference points that it can be daunting not to be influenced by something or someone. Really embrace what you like about a garment, how it fits and who you want to become wearing it, rather than try to keep up with trends or what other people are wearing. Wear what makes you feel your most confidant.”
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looks polished to perfection thanks to Cher.
On where she finds red-carpet styling inspiration: “I really enjoy people watching on the streets of London. East London has become this fashion breeding ground for style. It’s inspiring walking around places like Mare [Street] Hackney and Shoreditch. I also love looking at how people are dressed front row at fashion shows and how they put things together.”

CHER’S FALL FASHION HIT LIST
1) We’ve Got Your Back: Alexander Wang ‘Marti – Nickel’ Leather Backpack
“Wang makes a great bag. This one is perfect and SO chic! I love it because it looks like a high-fashion rucksack.”
2) Gold Rush: Eddie Borgo ‘Supra Link – Large’ Bracelet
“I’m really into chunky gold bracelets for fall. They make such a sharp statement when paired with dark, simple silhouettes.”
3) Waterproofed: Hunter for rag & bone Short Rain Boot
“Everyone needs a Hunter boot, and I love this short one—the perfect option for us petite gals who prefer not to be cut off at the knee with a tall boot. Practical, and what I call London chic.”
4) Boyfriend Approved: J Brand ‘Ace’ Crop Boyfriend Jeans (Arcadian Black)
“J Brand makes the best jeans, and these are great for fall. I love the black wash and the boyfriend feel.”
5) Bootie Basics: Topshop ‘Gwenda’ Bootie
“This is such a sleek boot for daytime and it’s the perfect height. Ladies that run around as much as I do won’t last the day in 5-inchers. The cut is flattering, and the black will look great paired with opaque tights in the fall.”
6) The Go-To Jacket: maje ‘Doctrine’ Rib Knit Hooded Jacket
“Maje is one of my favorite brands and I could live in this particular jacket. Paired with a sharp ankle boot or a heavy lace-up boot, this piece is perfect for running errands.”
7) A Kiss to Fall For: Clé de Peau Beauté Extra Rich Lipstick (refill) & ‘Extra Rich’ Lipstick Holder
“A bright, rich red lip is the very best accessory for fall. Clé de Peau Beauté lipstick is such a gorgeous product that moisturizes while you wear it.”
9) Queen of the Jungle: Topshop Animal Print Burnout Top
“I’m a huge fan of leopard as a neutral. This Topshop sweater is on my mind and an absolute fall staple. I love the idea of sweatshirts worn with feminine skirts and cool boots.”
9) Dainty Essential: Natasha Couture Thin Collar Necklace
“I have been looking everywhere for the perfect choker and think I’ve found it. It’s simple and sleek and would pair perfectly with a sweater by day or a chic silk dress for the evening.”
10) Capped Cool: Tarnish Chunky Knit Beanie
“The beanie hat is great for the colder months. It can be worn with a tailored jacket and a pretty dress or an army coat and jeans—it’s effortless and versatile.”
