My vacation tips and stories
August 13, 2012
It’s summer and that means on Fridays everyone should be sneaking out of work a little bit early to go on a weekend jaunt or grab a drink on a sunny rooftop. The fashion industry, which works really hard, also knows how to cut loose and play hard. In our new weekly column, called Summer Fridays, we catch up with industry insiders to find out what they do, where they go, and what they bring with them when they escape the daily grind. We’ve vacayed with Decades co-founder Christos Garkinos and went SCUBA-ing with Barbara Bui. This week, we’re catching up with celebrity stylist (Kate Bosworth and Elizabeth Olsen are clients) and JewelMint founder Cher Coulter. Bon voyage!
Our style crushes Kate Bosworth, Elizabeth Olsen, and Rose Huntington-Whitely look absolutely flawless on and off the red carpet. And who do they thank for being on best dressed lists everywhere? None other than their go-to gal Cher Coulter, who’s been named one of the most powerful stylists by The Hollywood Reporter. Coulter, an alum of the prestigious Central Saint Martins, got her start studying among the likes of Alexander McQueen and Phoebe Philo. Soon after graduation, Coulter started her own menswear line, AKA (fun fact: Hugh Grant wore all of her t-shirts throughout the movie, About A Boy), and went on to build a successful styling career. But her designer instincts were not left behind. Today Coulter is busy designing her own jewelry line with friend Kate Bosworth called JewelMint. That is, of course, in between her much-needed vacations to exotic destinations like Machu Picchu, Costa Rica, and Hawaii.
What is the craziest thing you’ve done on vacation?
Zip-lining in Costa Rica was pretty good and exciting.
What’s the worst thing that’s happened to you on vacation?
After spending a whole week surfing in Hawaii I misheard my teacher and paddled out against a huge wave which in turn threw me sideways and I spiraled to the shore and hurt my back…a lot.
Who’s the one person you travel with the most, and why? I’m really on my own because every time is a different adventure, or reason to be traveling, it could be my dad’s birthday in Peru or visiting friends in London or a chill trip to Tulum.
What was the most exotic meal you had while away?
Well, exotic I think lends itself to mean ‘fancy’ [but] to be honest I was obsessed with the Andean soups I ate throughout my recent trip in Peru…they were simple broths full of locally grown quinoa (red being the most nutritional) along with fresh locally grown vegetables, which in today’s processed world is ‘exotic.’ The dish was far tastier than any fancy dish in any fancy hotel in any fancy location.
Is there anything you wish you had done, but didn’t, on a recent trip?
I wish I had had time to do the four-day Inca trail to Machu Picchu while I was in Peru. I was only there 10 days and travelled from La Paz in Bolivia to Lima in Peru, so no time for four days of walking. I will go back though. Seeing those walkers emerge over the hill at the sungate of Machu Picchu and watching their jaws drop as they focused on Wayna Picchu and the epic ruins was a sight in itself! If I go back, I would get up before sunrise and walk Wayna Picchu and watch the sun come up over Machu Picchu. I’d do it alone and in silence.
What is something you fell in love with on vacation?
I fell in love with the culture of the Incas while on vacation in Peru. I love that they worship mother nature and the mountains are gods… their spirituality makes sense to me and the people seem so happy with what we in the western world would consider so little (materially).
What is your favorite song of the summer?
“We are young” by FUN. It reminds me of fun times at Coachella this year!!!
What are your packing essentials?
1. Leica camera. This camera makes everything look like a professional…it’s a great way of keeping a diary.
2. Probiotics for obvious reasons.
3. Sneakers (for walking)
5. iPhone, in case of emergencies and to play music.
6. Good book. I like to be transported to another place so a good read bout my destination is always fun.
